Summary: Knowing the effects and side effects of any medication is very important to rightly benefit from it. Ambien, widely used to treat insomnia has its own set of side effects, which range from dry mouth to suicidal thoughts.
It is crucial to know the side effects of any medicine before it’s taken, for our body is our precious asset and it needs to be kept healthy and safe. The same stands true for the medicine Ambien, which comes with brand names Ambien, Ambien CR, and Edluar, and generic name Zolpidem. The medicine is sedative and is also called hypotic. Zolpidem is used to treat insomnia and it affects chemicals in one’s brain, which due to imbalance cause sleep problems.
Ambien is often used as a short-term treatment of insomnia as it helps in relaxing the body to sleep. Though the impact is immediate and relieving, it comes with the cost of possible side effects that are to be watched out for and acted upon at once. In the category of less severe side effects come abnormalities such as diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, nausea, throat irritation, sluggishness, stomach upset, weakness, etc.
The more critical side effects that are to be reported immediately to your doctor include, severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching), difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling in hands, legs, mouth, lips, eyes, throat or tongue, throat closing, hoarseness, abnormal thinking, behavioral changes, chest pain, confusion, decreased coordination, difficulty swallowing or breathing, fainting, hallucinations, memory problems, mood changes, new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or actions, vision changes, etc.
This medicine makes a person fall sleep for 7-8 hours at a stretch and so it should be taken only when the required time is available; that goes to say that it should not be taken during working hours or before driving, etc. It is advisable not to drink alcohol while you are taking this medication for it will increase the side effects’ possibility. As it is a habit-forming medicine, it should be taken only if prescribed. The medicine should be kept in a safe place out of the reach of anyone who is addicted to drugs.
The patient should know if he/she is allergic to Zolpidem in advance in order to skip the fatal effects. Also, the doctor should be informed beforehand if the patient has any kidney disease, liver disease, lung disease, sleep apnea, history of depression, mental illness, or suicidal thoughts and history of drug or alcohol addiction. If the above symptoms are found positive it is crucial to adjust the dose intake or undergo special tests to safely take Ambien. The medicine should not be taken by pregnant and lactating women, as the effects of Ambien on the baby are still undiscovered. Sedative effects are much stronger in older adults leading to accidental falls and thus care should be taken to avoid such common mishaps.
